Within a forum there are postings, but in order to make it easy to find items, they are normally divided into Threads. A Thread is simply a topic of conversation, and people can then reply to that, and all the replies to a particular thread are then displayed together.

Of course a user may not always know whether an issue has already been covered, in which case they can use the forum's dedicated search engine to look across all the thraeds.
