Charging

As a VAR you can host clearString sites and charge based on their usage. The amount you charge, and the formulas or basis for charging are up to you. The system provides a comprehensive system to manage this measurement and charging for you. There are two areas of functionality that work together to do this:

Telemetry - measuring and reporting site usage

There are three categories of telemetry data feeds that you can use.

System - These are automatically created feeds recording

  • Page hits - the number of pages delivered
  • Bandwidth - the number of bytes delivered

Locked - These are custom feeds of values generated by the site itself, which you can define to record any metric that you want to charge by. Typical examples are:

  • Number of users (typically used to raise charges based on the maximum number of users in a period)
  • Value of ecommerce sales (typically used to raise charges as a percentage of the total sales value in a period)

Unlocked - These are custom feeds, that work in the same way as Locked ones, but are not appropriate for charging purposes as they are unlocked - meaning that the site owner (your customer) can modify them. (Unlocked telemetry is designed to provide extra functionality as a management tool for the site owner themselves).

Charging plans - charging users

These apply charges against the site owner's account.

They can be fixed regular amounts, or they can be variable, based on the values from the telemetry feeds.

Charging Plans are assigned to Site Groups, which contain the sites being charged.

A Site Group can have multiple Charging Plans assigned to it at the same time.
